Most insurance providers recognize cranial prostheses as a medical necessity when hair loss results from a diagnosed medical condition such as alopecia, chemotherapy, lupus, trichotillomania, or other related causes.

What’s Typically Covered

Most insurance plans will cover part or all of the cost of a cranial prosthesis when it’s deemed medically necessary. Coverage depends on your specific plan and provider. In general, insurance may cover:

• A custom or pre-made cranial prosthesis for medical hair loss

• One unit per benefit period (often every 12–24 months)

• Fittings and adjustments associated with your prosthesis

Verification Process

Before your appointment, we verify your benefits directly with your insurance provider to determine coverage, copays, and any out-of-pocket costs. This ensures there are no surprises and you know exactly what to expect before moving forward.

Verification typically takes 3–7 business days. Once completed, we’ll contact you with your coverage details and discuss your best options.

What You’ll Need

To begin the process, please have:

• A prescription or letter of medical necessity from your doctor or dermatologist

• Your insurance card

• A photo ID

The prescription must include the term “cranial prosthesis” and your diagnosis code (ICD-10) for medical hair loss.

Filing and Payment

Once your benefits are verified, we’ll handle the insurance claim submission on your behalf. If your plan covers partial payment, you’ll only be responsible for any remaining balance or copay.

For clients without coverage, we also offer self-pay options and can provide supporting documentation if you wish to submit a claim for reimbursement on your own.
