Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a prescription for a medical wig?
Yes. Most insurance providers require a prescription or letter of medical necessity from your doctor or dermatologist for a cranial prosthesis to be covered. The prescription should include your diagnosis and the term “cranial prosthesis,” not “wig.”
How long does insurance verification take?
Insurance verification typically takes 3–7 business days, depending on your insurer’s response time. We’ll contact you as soon as we receive your results and help you plan the next steps.
What documents do I need for my appointment?
Please bring your insurance card, photo ID, and your prescription or letter of medical necessity. If you have any recent notes from your doctor or insurance company regarding your hair loss, bring those as well.
Is my consultation covered by insurance?
Consultations are $50, due at the time of booking. This fee is not billed through insurance and applies to all clients.
What happens during a consultation?
During your consultation, we:
Verify your insurance benefits
Review your prescription or medical documentation
Discuss your style goals, comfort needs, and lifestyle preferences
Recommend custom or pre-made cranial prosthesis options that fit your coverage and budget
What if I’m running late or need to reschedule?
Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. Appointments are automatically cancelled after 15 minutes without notice. If no notice is given, your $50 consultation fee will be forfeited, and a new payment will be required to reschedule.
Do you offer virtual consultations?
Yes. Virtual consultations are available and offer the same personalized service and guidance as in-person visits.
What should I expect after my consultation?
We’ll submit your documentation to your insurance provider (if applicable), confirm your coverage, and finalize your selection. Once your cranial prosthesis arrives, we’ll contact you to schedule your fitting and styling appointment.
How do I get a prescription from my doctor?
To have your cranial prosthesis covered by insurance, you’ll need a prescription from your doctor.
Schedule an appointment with your primary care physician, dermatologist, or oncologist.
Explain that you are experiencing medical hair loss and need a prescription for a cranial prosthesis (not a “wig”).
Ask your doctor to include your diagnosis code (ICD-10) on the prescription.
Once you receive it, provide a copy to Rhesilient Roots Rx—we’ll handle the insurance verification and billing process for you.
